First Announcement
Background
In 1963 the first Symposium on Carpathian Geomorphology was organised in Poland and Slovakia. Since that time international collaboration of Geomorphologists was established. During next years, Carpathian-Balcan Geomorphological Commission became functional. Up to now, 33 volumes of the journal Studia Geomorphologica Carpatho-Balcanica have been published. Geomorphologists gathered in our Commission have organised meetings in each Carpathian and Balkan country. During the last meeting in Romania in 1998, the idea to organise next Conference in Poland was born. Our Scientific Committee wishes to emphasis the themes related to Quaternary relief evolution in relation to differentiated climatic and tectonic conditions, as well as anthropogenic influences. It is our intention to gather in Kraków geomorphologists representing all Carpathian-Balkan countries. Therefore, the Organisers will make every effort to reduce the expenses which participants of our countries incur in attending the Conference.Venue and Date
The Conference will be held in the Institute of Geography, Pedagogical Academy in Kraków. The main Conference lasts from the morning of 24 to the evening of 25 September 2001. A two-day field trip by bus to the Polish Western Carpathians will be organised for all participants on 26 and 27 September. The second excursion day will end up in Kraków. During the first day, problems pertaining to activity of contemporaneous geomorphic processes will be demonstrated at research stations, by the Jagiellonian University and Polish Academy of Sciences in the Outer Flysh Carpathians, with special attention to human impact on process intensity and Holocene environmental changes. During the second day, problems of Quaternary evolution of Outer Carpathian valleys in successive glacial/interglacial cycles in different neotectonic settings will be presented, as well as, Quaternary stratigraphy of fluvial terraces in the Dunajec river valley, and development of an intramontane basin.Presentations
The Conference will admit both oral papers and posters. Videos display may be also submitted on geomorphic topics related to present-day geomorphic processes in mountain environments of the Carpathians and Balkan Mts. Video session is planned during the field trip, at the Research Station of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organisation, Polish Academy of Sciences at Szymbark.Publication
Special issue of Studia Geomorphologica Carpatho-Balcanica will be devoted to publishing the proceedings of the Conference.Costs
The registration fee for the Conference is 100 USD. It will cover Conference materials (booklet of abstracts, guidebook of excursion). Daily costs per person:Excursion fee: 75 USD (two days – bus transportation, full board & accommodation)
